Safe Paths – Supporting Latin American Refugees in the Netherlands

Safe Paths: Integration, Protection, and Advocacy for Latin American Refugees in the Netherlands

2. Background and Context:

In recent years, the Netherlands has experienced a growing number of asylum applications from Latin American countries, particularly Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Many of these individuals are fleeing political persecution, state violence, humanitarian crises, and the collapse of democratic institutions. While the Dutch asylum system provides legal pathways for protection, Latin American refugees face unique challenges: linguistic barriers, cultural isolation, long and uncertain asylum processes, limited access to mental health services, and often a lack of visibility in national debates.

3. Objective:

To support the integration, legal protection, and civic participation of Latin American refugees and asylum seekers in the Netherlands through direct services, advocacy, and community-building.

4. Specific Goals:

  • Provide orientation, translation, and accompaniment services during the asylum process.

  • Offer workshops on Dutch society, legal rights, and access to healthcare and education.

  • Create safe spaces for Latin American refugees to share their experiences and build mutual support networks.

  • Advocate at the national and European levels for the recognition of politically persecuted Latin American nationals as refugees.

  • Promote public awareness about the conditions that force Latin Americans to flee their countries.

5. Activities:

  • Legal Support Clinics: Monthly sessions offering guidance on asylum procedures, appeals, and documentation.

  • Integration Workshops: Classes on Dutch culture, basic language support, rights, and responsibilities.

  • Community Dialogues: Safe gatherings (online and offline) to foster solidarity, healing, and empowerment.

  • Policy Advocacy: Engage with Dutch institutions, NGOs, and media to raise awareness and influence asylum policy.

  • Storytelling Campaign: Share refugee stories through social media, exhibitions, and public events.

6. Target Audience:

  • Cuban, Venezuelan, Nicaraguan, and other Latin American refugees and asylum seekers residing in the Netherlands.

  • Dutch institutions, legal professionals, and human rights organizations.

  • The general public and diaspora communities.

7. Impact:

  • Improved integration and well-being of Latin American refugees.

  • Increased visibility and legal recognition of political persecution in Latin America.

  • Stronger refugee-led support networks and civic participation.

  • Greater institutional awareness and accountability regarding the rights of Latin American asylum seekers.
