La Ruta: Building Civic Capacity for Democratic Change in Cuba
The next launch is on March 13, March 27 and April 10
1. Background and Context:
Cuba is currently undergoing one of the worst crises in its contemporary history. The collapse of state institutions, widespread shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and electricity, a failing housing infrastructure, and the escalation of political repression have created a humanitarian emergency. Independent journalism has grown in recent years, but its primary focus remains on reporting and investigation. There is still a large gap in the provision of practical civic tools, democratic education, and direct engagement strategies for citizens, especially youth.
2. Objective:
To empower Cuban citizens—especially young people—with civic education, leadership tools, and a clear roadmap for democratic engagement through a structured, action-oriented platform.
3. Specific Goals:
Develop and disseminate educational materials on rights, democratic values, and nonviolent civic action.
Train a network of youth leaders in and outside of Cuba with skills in organization, communication, and community engagement.
Provide resources for local civic initiatives, including toolkits, workshops, and digital safety guides.
Connect Cuban activists with Latin American and global networks working for democracy and human rights.
4. Activities:
Digital Platform Launch: Hosting content (videos, guides, podcasts) on civic education, democratic history, and peaceful activism.
Civic Leader Training Program: A series of online and in-person workshops for young activists.
Community Action Kits: Printable and digital guides with step-by-step instructions for community organizing and local initiatives.
5. Target Audience:
Young Cubans on the island (ages 18–35)
Cuban activists and civil society leaders in exile.
Latin American youth interested in democratic solidarity.
